Magnitude 6 Earthquakes Reach Unprecedented Frequency
By admin | November 25, 2007
If you have been following the Earth Watch series, you already know that I have been tracking Earthquakes now since March of 2006 to see if the predictions that earthquakes would accelerate in reaction to the cease of Chandler’s wobble in December of 2005 and January of 2006. The report years run from March 1st to the last day of February. We are now in the last few days of the 2nd year 3rd quarter. We have just experienced a magnitude 6 quake that puts us to the total average for a whole year — with 3 more months (and a few days) left to go in the year. This figure brings us to a frequency of magnitude 6 earthquake which is unprecedented in the known history of earthquakes.
To recap some information for you (although you should still read the Earth Watch series), the average for yearly numbers of quakes has been drawn from the period of 1990 through 2005, which is about when global tracking became a reality. There is a report in Earth Watch about studies which proved that quake frequencies were on the rise before these dates as well. When Chandler’s wobble stopped cold, which had never been known to happen before, predictions arose that earthquake frequency (as well as other natural disasters) would rise, especially strong quakes. So far these predictions are proving to be accurate.
The average yearly total of magnitude 6 earthquakes from the 1990 - 2005 period was slated at 134.
Last year between March 1st and the last day of February this year we experienced 139. This was a 4% increase.
Now this year in the last week of the 3rd quarter we have already reached the total of 134 magnitude 6 quakes. We have 3 months of year 2 to go yet. How crazy are quake frequencies going to get?
There are some other surprises in store for you when the Earthquake Watch Y2 - 3rd Quarter stats come out in a few weeks, so stay tuned.
