UPDATE: MYANMAR AND CHINA DISASTERS

Work continues to get aid to survivors of both disasters.

The l death toll in recent 7.9 quake and aftershocks in China is now surpassing 40,000. An unofficial estimate places possible totals at 66,000. China is now importing medical teams to help survivors. Rescue teams are still at work, but after this amount of time, rescue efforts are tapering off as finding trapped survivors is becoming less and less likely.

Millions are homeless as a result of this disaster. The Chinese government is now furnishing tents for those displaced by the disaster who have no relatives to take them in. Not enough tents are available, however, despite increased production to meet demands and any donations will be greatly appreciated.

Myanmar death tolls are hard to estimate yet. Aid has finally been approved from some countries and it is expected more aid visas will start getting approval now. Damage evaluation will soon be forthcoming. Not much can be known about the repercussions of this event until word comes back from evaluations from aid workers. Despite the damage to rice crops and the starvation of it’s own disaster-ravaged people, rice imports continue in Myanmar where citizens have been cited to being fed the rotting portions of the damaged crop which are spoiled for export. Further reports will be posted as news is received.

SRSS extends it’s heartfelt condolences to the survivors of these horrendous calamities.
